How to find the right counsellor...

Beginning therapy can feel daunting, and it takes real courage to take that first step.  Finding the right counsellor matters;  research shows that the quality of the therapeutic relationship is the strongest predictor of positive outcomes.

Here are some things worth checking with any counsellor before you begin.

✔️ Are they qualified and professionally registered? Unfortunately, anyone can call themselves a counsellor without formal training. A professionally trained counsellor will be registered with an ethical body such as BACP or NCPS, demonstrating that they have completed accredited training and meet professional standards, giving you reassurance that they have the right skills, experience, and accountability.

✔️ How do they work? Every counsellor has their own therapeutic style, but they should always be responsive to your needs. A good therapist will check in with you about how you communicate, explore your goals, review whether therapy is meeting your expectations and adapt their approach to support you effectively.

✔️ What is the initial call like? Most counsellors offer a short introductory call. Think of some questions you might have, such as:  What training and experience do you have?  What therapeutic methods do you use?  How do you review progress?  How long are sessions and what are the fees?  What is your cancellation policy?  Do you offer online or in‑person sessions?

✔️ Trust your instincts - After the call, take a moment to reflect: Did you feel heard and understood? Did they seem open, engaged, and professional?  Could you imagine feeling comfortable and safe with them? It’s perfectly okay to speak to a few counsellors before deciding.
